In other words, materials science simply means the study of the structure and properties relationship of materials. The role of the material scientist is to develop or synthesize new materials.

The structure of a material is the arrangement of internal Components of the material. in regards to subatomic structure, involves electrons within the individual atoms and interaction with their nuclei. on the atomic level, a structure consists of the arrangement of atoms or molecules relative to other atoms or molecules. Some structures can only be seen with the aid of microscopes while others can be seen with naked eyes. Those that can be seen with the aid of microscopes are called microscopic structural elements while those that can be seen with the naked eye are called macroscopic structural elements.

A property is a material trait in terms of the kind and magnitude of response to a specific imposed stimulus. In other words, property refers to a characteristic of a material that determines how it behaves or responds when subjected to a specific external force or condition. This characteristic can be defined in terms of its type (e.g., electrical, thermal, mechanical) and its intensity or magnitude (e.g., conductivity, strength, elasticity) when exposed to a particular stimulus like heat, force, or electricity.

In addition to the structure and Properties of material, there are also two crucial components involved in material science namely processing and performance. These four components of material science (structure,  properties, process and performance) have a distinct relationship to one another. For instance, the structure of a material will depend on how it is processed and also the performance of a material will depend on its properties.

Why study material science

We study material science to understand the properties, performance, and potential applications of various materials. This knowledge enables us to create and improve products, enhance sustainability, solve technical challenges, and contribute to advancements in technology and industry. Material science helps in the development of new materials with superior properties, enabling breakthroughs in fields such as medicine, electronics, construction, and energy.

Many times a material problem is one selecting the right material from the thousands of materials that are available. This means that when engineers or designers are working on a project, one of their biggest challenges is choosing the best material from a vast array of options. Each material has different properties such as strength, durability, weight, cost, and suitability for different environments, making the selection process critical to the success of the project.

Solid materials have been grouped into three classifications, namely;
1. Metal
2. Ceramics
3. Polymer

Materials in this group can be categorized into metallic and non-metallic substances. Metallic materials, such as iron and nickel-copper alloys, are characterized by their good conductivity, malleability, and strength. Non-metallic materials, like carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, are diverse in properties and applications, often found in organic and inorganic compounds, and essential for life processes and industrial applications.

Ceramics

Ceramics are compounds between metallic and non-metallic substances. Some of the common ceramics materials include;  Aluminium Oxide (Al2CO3) and silicon nitride (Si4N4). Clay minerals (porcelain), cement and glass are referred to as traditional ceramics.

Polymer

Polymers include plastics and rubber materials. Many of these are organic compounds that are chemically based on carbon, hydrogen etc.  They have large molecular structures that are often chain-like and have a backbone of carbon atoms. Examples of polymers are namely; polyethylene, nylon, polycarbonate etc

Composites

A composite is composed of two or more individual materials, which come from the categories of either metals, ceramics or polymers. The goal of designing a composite is to achieve a combination of properties that can not be found in a single material. some naturally occurring composite materials include wood and bone
